3D printing from your mobile with the MakerBot Mobile App

The MakerBot Mobile 1.0 App for the MakerBot Replicator 5th Generation Desktop 3D Printer was released last week and we wanted to have a play! Read on for our experience of 3D printing from our mobile.

We downloaded the app from iTunes and also downloaded the latest version of MakerBot Desktop 3.2.

In a matter of minutes we started playing!

First impressions were good, the app looks great and its connection to our MakerBot Replicator 5thGeneration desktop 3D printer is quick with very little delay. We found it easy to use straight off. The app’s functions and the way it looks and feels is familiar to MakerBot Desktop, so there were common grounds you knew instantly such as explore, library etc.

We worked out that to begin with, we needed to be near our printer so you can hit the “Go” button on the printer itself (we happened to be at the other end of our showroom!) But then once started, you can use the rest of the controls direct from the app on your phone, including pausing, cancelling, and watching your print in progress without being next to it.

Remote monitoring

It’s also quite interesting to know that when you are monitoring your 3D printer from your mobile app, yet using the printer controls directly, it feeds it back to your mobile, so you can keep an eye from afar about who is doing what to your MakerBot.

The on-board camera is pretty cool, watching the print remotely helps to monitor it, especially if you are doing a long print.

Whilst you can’t print from the MakerBot Replicator 5th Generation 3D printer’s internal memory via the mobile app, you can save files to your MakerBot library through MakerBot Desktop and then send those to the printer from your mobile.

Extra tools and tips
There’s also a couple of other little extras we like about the mobile app:

·       You can set a default printer, so if you’re lucky to have more than one, you can choose which one!

·       You can also save photos from the app direct to your camera roll on your phone (we used an iphone)

·       The app links really nicely to thingiverse and you can share the photos of your print in action

Just remember, your mobile needs to be in the same Wi-Fi network as the printer to connect up.

Overall

We think it’s a great app. We found it particularly useful for setting prints off quickly and easily – we always have our phones on us and don’t always want to lug our laptops to the other end of the office. The monitoring feature is great too, so we can keep an eye on the print and pause or stop it if need be.
