The next generation Sense 3D scanner by 3D Systems is a versatile, hand-held scanner that can operate at a maximum range of 2m (please note this range is dictated by the length of the USB cable which must be plugged in to your Windows PC or laptop when operating the scanner).

With automatic object recognition, it is simple and fast to use, capturing medium to larger objects, up to 2m3 with a good level of accuracy, close to 1mm with resolution at 1mm. The Sense 3D scanner comes with proprietary software for editing, enhancing and cropping your scan in a seamless and quick process. Within the Sense software you can also solidify your scan ready for 3D printing.

The finished scan can be exported into STL, OBJ, PLY and VRML formats, ideal for further processing or 3D printing.

Compatible with Windows operating systems.

12 month manufacturer warranty included.

Where can I download the next generation Sense 3D scanner user guide?

What is the scan volume of Sense 3D Scanner?

The scan volume ranges from 7", to 72". (Min: 0.2m x 0.2m x 0.2m, max: 2m x 2m x 2m). The Sense 3D scanner has automated settings for optimised scanning of small objects (<18"), medium objects (<32") and large objects.

What operating systems work with the Sense 3D Scanner?

The next generation Sense 3D scanner works on Windows operating systems.

What is the Sense 3D scanner's connectivity?

USB 3.0 is the preferred connection.

What file types does the Sense 3D scanner export?

The Sense 3D scanner software produces STL, OBJ, PLY and VRML files from the final scan.

Is the Sense Scanner compatible with 3D printers other than the 3D Systems range?

Yes, the Sense 3D scanner outputs an STL file which is compatible with any other desktop 3D printer.

How long does it take for the scanner to start?

The scanner will start supplying scan data one second after connection and identification.

What is the colour resolution of the scans from the Sense 3D Scanner?

The colour resolution of the next generation Sense scanner is 1920 x 1080 pixels, ideal for colour texture mapping.

Does the scanner need to be calibrated?

There is no need for any manual calibration by the user as the scanner self-calibrates during production.

What is the scanner's optimal distance range?

The Sense scanner can capture depth images from 0.2m to 1.6m away for the subject.

Will the scanner work outdoors?

Different lighting conditions can affect the scanner’s depth acquisition abilities. In general, the Sense 3D scanner is designed for indoor use and will work less optimally in direct sunlight.

Can the Sense scanner operate in complete darkness?

Yes, though you will not capture any colour with the scan data.

Why are nearby objects scanned with more detail than far away objects?

The scanner’s view is projective, meaning closer objects are seen with greater detail than objects that are further away. Basically, the scanner operates the same way as our eyes. As such, an object that is one inch in size and close to the scanner can be seen better than the same object that is farther away from the scanner.

Can I edit the scan once captured?

Yes once you have exported the scan, you are able to edit the file or mesh it with other designs.

The Sense 3D scanner is also compatible with Cubify Sculpt, design software programme, that allows you to edit, combine and mash up your scan. Cubify Sculpt is a 3D design programme that works in virtual clay, allowing you to create and modify objects by moulding them.

Is software included with the Sense 3D scanner?

The Sense 3D scanner comes with proprietary software. The scanner and software do not work without each other. The software allows you to scan, crop, edit, enhance and export your scan for further editing and 3D printing. It can be used in other design software such as Cubify Sculpt where your scan can be combined with an existing design or another scan.

Does the Sense 3D scanner use lasers?

Yes, it projects a pattern onto the surroundings using an infrared Class I laser projector. This pattern is invisible to the naked eye.

Is the scanner safe for the human eye?

Yes, the scanner is a Class 1 certified product. Moreover, the scanner includes hardware and firmware mechanisms that monitor the laser and shut it down in the event of the slightest fault.

Why are there two cameras on the right side of the scanner?

One of the cameras captures the geometry and the other captures the colour.

Can I open the Sense 3D scanner to see what's inside?

Opening the Sense 3D scanner is strictly forbidden and will be considered a material violation of the license agreement.

What temperature range is suitable for the scanner?

The scanner should not be operated outside of the specified temperature range. The scanner’s design specifications call for temperatures between 10°C and 40°C for optimal use. Higher or lower temperatures may alter the scanner’s performance, and in extreme deviations from the defined specification, the scanner may not work at all.
