The Metal X by Markforged revolutionises the 3D printer market by offering precision 3D printing in a variety of metals, ideally suited for creating key components, custom parts and spare parts within the automotive, aerospace and industrial markets.

 

The Markforged Metal X uses a process of Atomic Diffusion Additive Manufacturing (ADAM). Printing the part using a bound metal powder rod that, once sintered, transforms into a dense metal part, promoting crystal growth through all axes to produce parts with excellent mechanical properties. This process also enables the creation of parts printed with a closed cell inner core encased in a solid outer shell.

 

Due for release Q3/Q4 2017, the Metal X is designed to print in a variety of metals including:

  • Aluminium 6061: general purpose aluminium for good machinability, strength and weldability. Can also be anodised

  • Aluminium: strong aluminium alloy with good fatigue strength and high strength-to-weight ratio. Alloy is stronger than common structural steels (A36, 1018)

  • 303 Stainless Steel: maintains corrosion up to 800°C, ideal for post-processing in CNC milling and turning operations

  • 17-4 Stainless Steel: good combination of high strength, corrosion resistance and hardness

  • A2 Tool Steel: air-hardened with excellent impact resistance

  • D-2 Tool Steel: high carbon and chromium content provides good hardness and abrasion resistance (but not as tough as A2)

  • IN Alloy (Inconel) 625 BETA: Nickel-based superalloy with good chemical and heat resistance, and strength

  • Titanium Ti-6Al-4V BETA: Bio-compatible material with high tensile strength and fatigue resistance. Bears highest strength-to-weight ratio of any metal

The Metal X has a Z-layer resolution of 50 microns and features a unique in-process inspection system. A laser displacement sensor affixed to the print head scans and verifies the progress of the print, in conjunction with the cloud-based Markforged software Eiger to ensure dimensional accuracy at critical tolerances.
